CRE Organizational Profile
Peace One Day
Type of Organization: Non-governmental - Non-Profit
Home Country: United Kingdom
21 September is Peace Day, a day for individuals to become part of a wide-scale community action, as well as a day that provides a window of opportunity for aid organizations to carry out life saving work.
You may already know that Peace One Day led the initiative to establish the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence, unanimously adopted by United Nations member states as 21 September – Peace Day. You may also know that we then proved that the day could work in areas of conflict, most notably in Afghanistan, where Peace Day agreements have led to the vaccination against polio of 4.5 million children in recent years. We are grateful to UNICEF, WHO, UNAMA and other UN agencies for making it a great success.
Over the years, the Peace One Day team has developed a truly global education resource collection that advances active learning in the areas of peace, non-violence and intercultural cooperation. Access our free resources and explore our lesson plans with ideas for Peace Day activities here.
These successes and many others led filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to launch the Global Truce 2012 campaign: what we hope will be the largest reduction of violence on one day—Peace Day 21 September 2012—a world record; and the largest ever gathering of individuals in the name of peace.
Peace One Day aims to advance learning in the areas of conflict resolution, peace and sustainability, using Peace Day - 21 September - as a focus. Our free, global education resources, featuring embedded short films, include 15 detailed lesson plans on topics such as ending bullying, peace-building and much more. Visit our website at http://peaceoneday.org/teachers/ to get the free materials we have on offer.
As of August 2012, 11,550 global educators from more than 175 countries have been accessing the Peace One Day Education Resources. In addition to our widely used The Day After Peace curriculum and 32-minute film, we have developed a Peace Day Activity Guide to help support school events in support of Peace Day. In 2012, as part of the countdown to Global Truce 2012, Peace One Day Founder Jeremy Gilley is using Skype in the Classroom to connect with students in 193 countries around the world.
