A Few Words from the Webmaster
Greetings colleagues and friends. Welcome to the November Edition of our newsletter. We’re catching our breath here at the CRE Connection after a busy and productive October. This year’s International Conflict Resolution Day (held on October 15th) was a great success and the Conflict Resolution Education Connection was a key participant. Some ways we were involved in the annual event sponsored by the Association for Conflict Resolution are as follows:
- We published a groundbreaking 2009-2010 CRE Teacher’s Calendar filled with great ideas for use in a classroom or youth program. You can view it online (check out the calendar hotlinks) and download a copy here.
- We created a fun set of Conflict Resolution Interactives to promote CR content sharing via short engaging activities. These remain available.
- We held a webinar on conflict resolution educational games development with noted experts in the field.
- We hosted an exciting giveaway of conflict resolution educational games, distributing multiple copies of “Harmony Island: A Conflict Resolution Tropical Adventure” and “Cool School: Where Peace Rules!” on a special CRE flash drive.
- We provided the technological support for an international youth poetry contest on “Ways We Make Peace” hosted by the Association for Conflict Resolution. Soon we will be sharing the poems online.
- We hosted the live chat for an ACR teleconference for college students on Careers in Peacemaking and Conflict Resolution (more than 50 people attended).
- More than 8300 unique visitors (you perhaps?) dropped by the website in October, making for our busiest month yet.
As usual, in this issue of the newsletter we call your attention to some great content from the Conflict Resolution Education Connection website in hopes that you might find something of use. Thanks again for your interest in conflict resolution in educational contexts.

Help Kids Have a Heart with Social Emotional Learning
Readers will appreciate this video from Edutopia.org featuring an activity designed by the RCCP program that helps young people explore put-ups and put-downs in an engaging way. - Holding a red paper heart inscribed with the words "I am important," teacher Sarah Button tells a story to her class of engrossed fifth graders. Each time she comes to a part of the story in which the protagonist, Maria, is on the receiving end of a deflating put-down ("Get up, lazyhead," "You gonna wear those old rags to school?" "What's up with that rat's nest on your head?"), Button tears away a part of the heart. Conflict Transformation Education for At-Risk Youth
This slide show was presented by Sarah Bernhardt during the Association for Conflict Resolution 9th Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Teaching conflict skills to adolescents can be challenging enough without adding the difficulties facing at-risk youth. Through grant funding and community collaboration, the UND Conflict Resolution Center developed a training protocol, training sessions and materials to teach conflict management skills, healthy decision making and non-violent choices to the at-risk youth population. Manual for Community Colleges Developing Programs in Peace & Conflict Studies
The Conflict Resolution Education Connection is pleased to present the results of a very productive Capacity Building Seminar for Community Colleges with Peace and Conflict Studies Programs held this past June in Ohio. You can read more about the seminar in the manual. The manual is a product of a collaboration in which lessons learned on the process of developing programs, certificates and degrees in peace and conflict studies at community colleges were shared. It is a resource for faculty and administrators authored by faculty and administrators. You can download the full manual or just review individual sections using the links located at the link below.

Featured CRE Project
Words Work Curriculum Now Available
Experienced conflict resolution educators, Nancy Kaplan from CRU and Kathryn Liss from HIPP teamed up with the American Bar Association’s Section on Dispute Resolution to produce a new conflict resolution skills curriculum. Thanks to funding from the JAMS foundation, the materials are available at no cost. The Words Work curriculum is geared toward youth in grades six to eight. During 45 minute sessions, educators guide youth through interactive lessons that focus on relationships, problem-solving, communication and leadership skill-building. The package includes a facilitators manual and a set of supplemental work sheets. You can preview it online at the link below.

3rd International Conflict Resolution Education Summit
If you work in the Conflict Resolution Education or Peace Education or Social Emotional Learning fields, you won’t want to miss the 3rd International Summit on Conflict Resolution Education (CRE). The theme for 2010 is Building Infrastructures for Change: Innovations in Conflict Resolution Education (CRE) and Justice Initiatives. This conference provides an opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration and research on issues related to the development of infrastructure in CRE and justice initiatives. Participants will exchange best practices, evaluation methodology, creation of policy implementation structures, consideration of obstacles to success and new and innovative use of training, resources and technology. The pre-conference events will happen March 24-25 followed by the main event on March 26-27, 2010 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. Restorative Justice in the School Setting: A Whole School Approach
This resource is a 12 page PDF paper promoting the teaching of restorative justice in schools. The paper was written by Lyn Harrison, Educational Psychologist, Manager of Education programs Marist Youth Care in Sydney, Australia. The paper explains what Restorative Justice Programs in schools aim to develop and presents a model which encapsulates a range of strategies along a continuum. The paper includes a script of a role play that can be used in the Restorative Mediation process by a teacher and a student when an issue arises. Another model that is presented in the paper is the Restorative Meeting model that uses 7 linear steps used during the meeting with all key stakeholders. This model can be used when a student’s ongoing behavior or serious incident is of such severity that it warrants the involvement of the school’s executive committee.

The module describes how to identify situations in which soft and firm limits are used and within the modules, you will be able to practice your responses in similar situations. For each module you can download a zipped version to post on your web server and/or you can download a version of the module for import into Blackboard or Moodle.
