August 2010 CRETE News

Welcome to This Edition

Another School Year and More Great Resources

Welcome to the (late) August Issue of the CRETE Connection Newsletter! While seems like summer has passed way too quickly, lots of good things have been happening. In this issue we are particularly pleased to announce the immediate availability of the new CRE Teacher's Calendar. Our 2nd edition (better than ever) was developed collaboratively with our associates from the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR). The primary working partners on the calendar included three key groups, CRETE's CREducation.org, ACR’s Education Section and ACR’s Conflict Resolution Day Committee.

The full-color 28-page (11x8.5 inch) calendar covers the school year, running from August 2010 through June 2011. Each month includes a full page of instructions for learning activities and educator tips to promote conflict resolution in schools. The calendar's date grid highlights significant holidays, conflict resolution events and peacemaker birthdays. The freely available pdf and web versions (great for use on a smartboard!) include hotlinks to reference materials, more information on calendar days and links to learning modules and relevant movie clips.

Our goal is to get the calendar into as many schools as possible and in particular into the hands of pre-service and classroom teachers and the staff of school-based peer mediation, restorative justice, social emotional learning and anti-bullying programs. To this end we have set aside a portion of the printed calendars that we will make available at no charge. These can be ordered online as "No-cost Single Calendars" (limit one per person) or as a "No-cost School or Youth Group Calendar 5-pack" that must be mailed to a school or youth-serving organization in order to qualify for free postage and handling. See the story below to arrange to get your copy today.

Many New CRE Learning Modules

The educational worker bees have been busy at CREducation.org and we have released quite a few new online learning modules. The list includes the following:

These guides explore topics of special interest to educators and they are formatted so that they can be viewed online or downloaded and used in learning management systems like Blackboard or Moodle. And recently we started publishing the original editable master copies as well so that you can modify the module using a free open source editor and then republish it to meet your local training needs. Definitely worth checking out!

Squash It: Routes to Mediation for Young People

This 19-page nicely illustrated booklet (available for download as a pdf) was written by young people associated with the U.K.-based PeerLink initiative who wanted to share their mediation expertise and get other young people mediating.

The youth-friendly guide addresses questions like: What are the key skills you need to be a good mediator? How do you plan a mediation session? What should you do if mediation goes wrong? Print copies are available by request via http://www.peerlink.org.uk
