Odessa Regional Mediation Group Educational Projects, Ukraine

Let me, please, continue my presentations of our Western CIS partners in PE/CRE activity.

Main programs of Odessa Regional Group of Mediation (Ukraine) in the Sphere of Education.

Odessa Regional Group of Mediation (ORGM) – is a non-governmental organization that was created for propagation and implementation of mediation and other principles, techniques of Alternative Dispute Resolution in the different spheres of social life. ORGM has been working with education system since 1995.

Basic programmes of the last 3 years.
1.       Education and familiarizing of school education specialists with principles of Alternative dispute resolution and restorative justice.
2.      Implementation of the restorative justice into educational process.
3.      Development of Peer Mediation Programmes.
4.       Creation of on-line community of educational specialists who implement restorative justice into upbringing and educational process.
5.      Implementation of Conflict Studies courses in higher education curricula.

The Odessa Regional Group of Mediation (ORGM) main task is to introduce others to the principles and techniques of Alternative Dispute Resolution used by different specialists and practitioners in educational system and support the implementation of these practices into education and upbringing processes.

Basic programmes of the last 3 years

1.       Education and familiarizing of school education specialists with principles of Alternative dispute resolution and restorative justice. First of all regular seminars for school psychologists (counselors), special sections and presentations on conferencies are conducted. The main target groups are school psychologists (counselors) that are working with pupils’ conflicts and school upbringing managers. The main task of this direction of activity is an enhancement of means implemented in school with children conflicts on the base of tolerance, responsibility and respect. This activity is spread over the south of Ukraine. The main result is the wide awareness in the field of conflict resolution of the pedagogical staff of the region and usage of mediation elements in a set of schools as well as delivering of difficult cases to the mediators of ORGM. 

2.      Implementation of the restorative justice into educational process. The main task of the programme is to elaborate an educational course on theory and practice of restorative justice for a school education. The programme is developed by the working group of teachers of law and history, methodologists and university specialists in law, criminology and psychology. At the beginning the special course as a part of required subjects on law and history was included and teaching material was developed. The course curriculum consists of 3 parts – restorative justice theory, its development and system in different countries and process of implementation in Ukraine and practical part on mediation technologies. At the second step the course should be approbated in schools of the region and teaching materials should be corrected and completed. At the final stage the course will be presented at the schools of the other regions of Ukraine so as teachers could teach it in schools.

3.      Development of Peer Mediation Programmes
Within the last 2 years 7 trainings were conducted on the programme of Peer Mediation in Odessa. 47 peer mediators were prepared in 4 schools of the city and 10 of them are working at present. 73 presentations for children, teachers and parents took place within the programme. 33 mediation processes were carried out, 23 of them – by peer mediators (pupils).

4.       Creation of on-line community of educational specialists who implement restorative justice into upbringing and educational process, that is based on mailing list services and online forum communication.  

5.      Implementation of Conflict Studies courses in higher education curricula. Course on Conflict studies, Restorative justice and Mediation are developed and taught for students of law.
