New Diverse Teaching Kit Offered About Bullying

A new teaching kit, named “Bullied”  is now being offered via the Teaching Tolerance website at: http://www.tolerance.or/kit/bullied .  The film (dvd) “Bullied” is a documentary that chronicles a student’s encounters at the mercy of anti-gay bullies.  The kit, which is being offered for free, will be shipped beginning in mid-September.  There is an electronic order form on the website.  The site indicates it is possible to receive the film in time to use during National Bullying Prevention Month in your classroom (October 2010).  The kit includes: the 40 minute documentary film, a two-part viewer’s guide including lesson plans and activities for staff for use in development and access to additional materials online.  Please note that the package is designed to assist teachers, administrators and counselors create a safe environment and create an awareness about the issue for all students, not just those who are gay and lesbian.  There is a limit of one kit per school.

Free 2010-2011 CRE Teacher’s Calendar now available

Good news -  the 2nd Edition of the CRE Teacher’s Calendar has now been released. The 2010-2011 calendar, a cooperative project of ACR’s CR Day Committee, ACR’s Education Section and CRETE, provides activities, tips, and links to conflict resolution resources and significant calendar dates throughout the school year. Print versions will be distributed to teachers around the country and ACR will make a limited number of copies available for order via the web (details TBA).

Topic Decided For the 2009 – 2010 National Peace Essay Contest!

The United States Institute of peace (USIP) is proud to announce the topic for the 2009-10 National Peace Essay Contest: ‘The Effectiveness of Nonviolent Civic Action.’ Students will examine cases where nonviolent methods have been used and discuss under what conditions nonviolent civic actions are most likely to achieve justice, end conflict, or lead to positive political and social change.

First-place state winners of the contest receive scholarships and are invited to Washington for a five-day awards program.

Blogtalkradio, a talk radio podcast - features an interview with Margaret Leeds on CRETE topics.  Margaret, a distinguished educator, school administrator, mediator and consultant has 37 years of experience in Conflict Resolution Management Skills.  She was centrally involved in the recent San Antonio CRETE training. Contests For Students for CR Day (October 15, 2009)

The Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education (CRETE) Project and The Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) are planning two new contests for Teachers and their students.  This year, Conflict Resolution (CR) Day is on October 15.  There is a Video Contest, which is geared to College and University students.  In this contest, students are invited to create and submit a two minute or less video depicting the power of conflict resolution.  The submission time frame for this contest is expected to be September 1, 2009 to October 1, 2009.  Complete contest rules are available online.

There is also a Poetry Contest available for CR Day for students in elementary, middle/intermediate and high schools.  This contest will take place in the Fall 2009.  If you would be interested in receiving information about this contest, teachers need to e-mail representatives from ACR at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and information will be sent to you.

ThinkQuest Website Competition 2009

The ThinkQuest Website Competition 2009, sponsored by the Oracle Education Foundation (OEF), is now open to teams of students, ages 9-19, from anywhere in the world. Each team must be coached by a teacher or school employee.

Teams are challenged to develop an educational website on topics of their choosing, including conflict resolution, of course. Website entries may utilize a variety of technologies and take a variety of creative forms.

Participating students can develop important 21st century skills such as teamwork, critical thinking, self-direction, and technology skills.

Entries are due on April 2, 2009, giving teams up to eight months to create their websites. Professional educators from around the world will judge all entries.

Qualifying entries will be published in the ThinkQuest Library, the world’s largest online repository of student-developed learning projects, visited by millions of web learners each month.

Prizes may include laptop computers, digital cameras, school grants, and a trip to the awards event in San Francisco, depending on placement.

Tricia Jones and Larry Dieringer to provide Conference Keynote Addresses

The upcoming March 9-11 CRE conference in Fairfax Virginia is sure to be an interesting one for CRE teachers from all levels of the Educational system. The conference, entitled Sustaining Conflict Resolution Education: Building Bridges to the Future, is being co-sponsored by The Association for Conflict Resolution’s Education Section, George Mason University’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR), and the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). Larry Dieringer, Executive Director of Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR) will present 25 Years: Looking Back and Looking Ahead wherein he reflects on his 24+ years at ESR and on the growth and changes in the field as a whole.

Tricia Jones, director of the Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education project, will provide a keynote to a crowd that will include 600 middle school mediators from the Fairfax County Schools entitled Changing the World-Youth Mediators Across the World.

New Journal focuses on Peace Education and Social Justice

A new online journal has debuted called In Factis Pax (In Knowledge there is Peace). As described on the journal’s website,

In Factis Pax is an online journal of peace education and social justice dedicated to the examination of the epistemological relationship between knowledge, peace, and social justice. The peer reviewed journal seeks articles which examine issues central to the formation of a peaceful society- the prevention of violence, political challenges to peace and democratic societies.”

The journal is based at the University of Toledo’s Judith Herb College of Education, also home to the Center for Nonviolence and Democratic Education.
