Seventh Annual Conference on Peace Education - Ontario, Canada - November 21-23, 2008

For the past six years, the Canadian Centres for Teaching Peace (CCTP) has worked in partnership with the McMaster Centre for Peace Studies to facilitate the Annual Conferences on Peace Education in Canada. These conferences provide opportunities for anyone and everyone to collaborate, exchange knowledges, and develop critical skills for nonviolent social change. The conferences also aim to demonstrate to the public that anyone can be engaged in peace education, and that peace education is invaluable to a sustainable future. To these aims, the Seventh Annual Conference on Peace Education will include workshops, presentations, and public speakers demonstrating best practices and encouraging critical engagement as global citizens.

The conference will be held from November 21st to November 23rd, 2008 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, primarily at McMaster University.

Theme: “What Can I Do For Peace? Engaged Citizenship for the Sustainable Future” For more information or to submit a workshop or paper proposal, please see http://www.peace-education.ca/pec/ or email

Israeli-Palestinian Workshop on Education for Peace - December 5-6, 2008

Israeli-Palestinian Workshop on Education for Peace
Tantur, Jerusalem - December 5-6, 2008

Following the workshops of January, April and August 2008 we are holding the Fourth Peace & Democracy Education Workshop that will once again bring together peace educators, curricula writers, encounter facilitators, peace studies practitioners, conflict resolution practitioners, mediators, and activists from academia, research sector, governmental and community organizations and others from Israel, Palestine and beyond.

The Workshop will be a tremendous opportunity for dialogue, debate and visioning with collaboration and cooperation between the body of theory and practice. The Workshop will be meeting grounds for dialogue and mutual learning from the field of peace education from the viewpoint of academia and from the field of practioners. The Workshop will raise critical issues and acquire new insights into the profound peace education developments in Israel, Palestine and around the world. Furthermore, the Workshop will provide an excellent opportunity to build connections across multi-disciplinary sectors.

This workshop will be organized by thematic tracks.  Participants will be able to attend workshops and sessions in any of the tracks but for those who would like to focus more on a specific area will be able to do so.  The following are the three tracks:
- Academic Track
- Experiential Track
- Classroom lesson plans and experiences in peace education

The organization of the workshop on these tracks is based on the recommendations of the last two workshops.  We hope that it will enable people to go deeper into the subject areas of their interest.

Registration is open through November 30, 2008
Deadline for submitting abstracts is November 28, 2008
Deadline for Palestinian Permit Requests is November 19, 2008

Participation - Call for Abstracts
IPCRI is calling on potential participants to submit an abstract for making a presentation at the workshop.  This is not a formal academic conference therefore; abstracts will be evaluated on a wider basis than the normal academic criteria.  We are looking for creative, exciting and innovative approaches to peace education.

Mountain Retreat and Learning Center Young Adult Residency Program

My name is Alisa Pykett and I am a Help Increase the Peace Program (HIPP) facilitator.  I was heavily involved in HIPP when I did AmeriCorps at a place called the Peace Learning Center in Indianapolis, IN.  Now I work at The Mountain Retreat and Learning Center in Western North Carolina—an organization committed to peace, justice, and environmental sustainability.

The Mountain is currently running the first session of our Young Adult Residency Program:  A Different Kind of Internship. The residency program helps young adults cultivate a sense of meaning and purpose so that they carry an authentic commitment to social change into their relationships, work, and life choices. Participants in the residency program leave The Mountain with concrete skills, a lifelong thirst for greater awareness, and the belief that they have the capacity and responsibility to work with others to bring peace, justice, and sustainability to the center of their communities. The Spring 09 session will run January 19 - May 4.
