Spring is here - and good things are blooming in CRE
Welcome to the latest Conflict Resolution in Teacher Education (CRETE) email newsletter. As the website project director I'm pleased to be able to announce to you that there WILL be a 3rd Edition of our immensely popular and resource-rich Conflict Resolution Education activities calendar. As you'll see in the news below, we have a new editorial team committed to producing the 2011-2012 edition (our 3rd) and content submissions are now being collected. Please join in and help us make it the best yet! Also exciting is the upcoming 4th International CRE Conference being held in Cleveland, Ohio June 8-13, 2011. It represents a marvelous opportunity to meet with others interested in Conflict Resolution in Education working at all levels and from across many different settings. I plan to attend and will be participating in the ACR Education Section meeting scheduled for the Friday. Perhaps I'll see you there?

Playworks Playbook
As the weather warms up, educators may really appreciate this great collection of playground games and activities appropriate for K-5 students. Produced by Playworks, the 390-page Playbook includes a structured curriculum in Violence Prevention and Peace Promotion. The Violence Prevention materials focus on providing students with a set of foundation skills for preventing violence using a framework called the Five Fingers of Safety. The Peace Promotion materials focus on proactive measures to encourage and foster a healthy community, and can be used with a variety of student groups.

Content Wanted for 3rd Edition of the CRE Activity Calendar!

Got a notion on sharing emotions? Have a song that helps us get along? Maybe a scheme to achieve a dream? We want ‘em.
We’re looking for the ideas that are bouncing around your head – and your classroom – to motivate, move and make students think about the awesome power of conflict resolution to make a difference in their lives.
Many of you know and have used our first two editions of the Conflict Resolution Activities Calendar in your classroom. Some may only recently have heard about this student-centered resource for teaching CR skills and concepts in K-12. By all accounts, it’s been a well-received tool that warrants a third year with even wider distribution.
That’s where you come in. We need the energy and ideas our community has to fill in the gaps and expand our coverage for some important concepts and critical CR skills. Any activities you have used, read about, thought about, or just imagined right now while reading this letter are fair game. They should be specific activities and curriculum modules that K-12 teachers can weave into their classroom experience and actively engage students. Steady Growth in Website Traffic builds to 11,000 unique visits monthly
One key indicator of a useful web resource is the number of unique visitors that browse to the site in a given month. This statistic is a good measure of site growth because it filters out repeat visits by the same user IP address during that month so as not to overweight visits by one very eager visitor or busy staff member. CREducation.org has experienced steady growth since launch, reaching a monthly high of more than 11,000 unique visits in November of 2010. In terms of overall content delivered, another useful measure is the number of full pages (featuring combined text and graphics, not just server “hits”) served. The Conflict Resolution in Education clearinghouse passed a milestone in December of 2010 when it served up its Six Millionth page. The site is being moved onto a brand-new server that will provide faster access speeds and real-time redundant backup to ensure that CREducation.org can continue to serve the CRETE project and the broader CRE community well into the future.

New Editors Selected for 3rd Edition CRE Activity Calendar
We are pleased to announce a new editorial team for the 3rd Edition of our popular Conflict Resolution Education Activity Calendar. Selected via a competitive application process, the 3rd Edition will be co-edited by Marina Piscolish, PhD (Hawaii, Mapping Change, LLC) and Kathy Wian (University of Delaware, Conflict Resolution Program) with support from Susan Young (Hawaii), Regina McCarthy (Pittsburgh, PA) and several others. The team will curate the content of the calendar, working with submissions from contributors (see submission form here) and newly developed content as needed. The theme for the 2011-2012 edition will include a focus on the relationship between conflict resolution practices and health and wellness.
Marina Piscolish was originally a secondary teacher of social studies, who later earned a doctorate in Education from University of Pittsburgh focused on critical democracy in school systems and in reform efforts. Upon moving to Delaware in 1993, she created the first CR Center at the University of Delaware, still in operation today. Originally called the Program on Conflict Resolution in Education, it later expanded to serve other sectors and dropped education from its title, while education remained a heavy focus of its work. Currently in private practice in Hawaii, Piscolish teaches Conflict Resolution for Educators at the University of Hawaii.
Kathy Wian is the Director of the Conflict Resolution Program (CRP) at the Institute for Public Administration at the University of Delaware. Kathy has a Masters in Public Administration and a B.S. in Business Administration. For the past 16 years, CRP has provided a variety of conflict resolution services to teachers, administrators, school boards, parents, advocates and students. They have conducted workshops focused on shared decision making, strategic change, peer mediation, conflict resolution, and collaborative meetings to name a few. CRP also manages Delaware’s statewide special education mediation program and the statewide IEP meeting facilitation program.
